A three-response task reveals how attention alters decision criteria but not appearance

چکیده
Whether attention alters appearance or just changes decision criteria continues to be controversial. When subjects are forced choose which of two equal targets, one has been pre-cued, a higher contrast, they tend the cued target. This interpreted as increasing apparent contrast However, when must decide whether targets have unequal respond veridically with no effect attention. The discrepancy between these comparative and equality judgments is explained by altering but not appearance. We supposed that apparently proportion their uncertainty in favor To test this hypothesis, we used three-response task, chose target had also option report appeared equal. task disentangled potential effects on from those criteria. found narrower about what constituted were more likely target, supporting stealing hypothesis. Across population, attentional cue

Attention alters decision criteria but not appearance: a reanalysis of Anton-Erxleben, Abrams, and Carrasco (2010).
Paying attention to a stimulus affords it many behavioral advantages, but whether attention also changes its subjective appearance is controversial. K. A. Schneider and M. Komlos (2008) demonstrated that the results of previous studies suggesting that attention increased perceived contrast could also be explained by a biased decision mechanism. This bias could be neutralized by altering the met...

information than it can process effectively. The high energy cost of neuronal activity involved in cortical computation severely limits our capacity to process this information1. Visual attention serves as a mediating mechanism, enabling us to selectively grant priority of processing to certain aspects of the visual scene. One means of granting priority is to direct one’s gaze towards the relev...
متن کاملAttention alters the appearance of motion coherence.
Selective attention enhances visual information processing, as measured by behavioral performance and neural activity. However, little is known about its effects on subjective experience. Here, we investigated the effect of transient (exogenous) attention on the appearance of visual motion, using a psychophysical procedure that directly measures appearance and controls for response bias. Observ...
متن کاملAttention alters the appearance of spatial frequency and gap size.
Transient attention is the automatic and short-lasting preferential processing of an area in visual space initiated by sudden stimulation in the same vicinity. Transient attention enhances early visual processing in a variety of dimensions, increasing contrast sensitivity, spatial resolution, and acuity. A recent study established that the increase in contrast sensitivity is accompanied by an i...
متن کاملSpatial attention increases performance but not subjective confidence in a discrimination task.
Selective attention to a target yields faster and more accurate responses. Faster response times, in turn, are usually associated with increased subjective confidence. Could the decrease in reaction time in the presence of attention therefore simply reflect a shift toward more confident responses? We here addressed the extent to which attention modulates accuracy, processing speed, and confiden...
